In a facebook post on the Off Grid Living & Survival page, people were asking about the state with the highest percentage of homesteads relative to total households.
Can you guess what state has (1) the most homesteads and (2) the highest percentage of homesteads relative to total households?
For Cheaters, a Cheat Sheet
This chart shows the Top States (~27) with respect to number of homesteads. The percent is of the number of households in the given state. If your state is not included in my cheat sheet, then you may still view the total homesteads in it by using this interactive map provided by Newsweek.
Some thought Idaho had the highest percentage of homesteaders. It is not so. However, Idaho is certainly up there in the Top 10, ranking at number seven. My initial thought was Montana, which is a really good guess, given it does, in fact, have the most homesteads of any state, regardless of a state’s size.
Nevertheless, because North Dakota has 26% fewer households than that of Montana, and only 22% fewer homesteads, it has the largest percentage of homesteads relative to total households by state.
The Welk Homestead
Strasburg, North Dakota
So, do I always think of that 1996 movie, Fargo, when someone mentions North Dakota? Oh, you betcha, yeah.
